Reflection:
In the Forbes article “Mining Firm Backs Green Shipping in spite of U.S. Opposition at COP 30,” journalist Saleem H. Ali describes The Green Pioneer, a ship from an iron ore mining company based in Australia. The ship is fueled by ammonia, and as obstacles such as the infrastructure required for these engines rise, the company continues in their efforts to invest in this project. For context, the article provides information about the International Maritime Organization, noting that it had previously sought a global consensus of a way to integrate market mechanisms into their decarbonization attempts—an agreement that the US discourages.
I was drawn to this article because it was surprising. Who would think that a mining company would support decarbonization? The Green Pioneer is an example of how it is possible for groups like members of the mining industry to be willing to decarbonize. I think it’s so easy to assume that certain groups are associated with certain ideologies and stances—I just did, too, when I saw the title of this article—but reading this article reminds me that what I assume really may not be the actual case. I wonder what it takes—how many articles and what methods of communication—to really spread awareness that mining companies can support decarbonization, too?
