Reflection:

In The Wall Street Journal article “Cisco Gave All 90,000 Employees Their Own AI Agent,” journalist Belle Lin discusses how a company named Cisco's employees around the world received their own personalized AI agent(s). The purpose and intention behind providing these personalized agents were to support day-to-day needs (e.g. helping write emails) as well as “to consolidate the AI tools [the company] used” (Lin). The data for these agents are regulated to ensure that there are no conversations between the AI tools and other people or AI tools, along with supporting the protection of the company’s data, according to the article.

I have heard of the use of AI in the workplace—for example, when looking at online class content provided by Google employees, I learned about (if I recall correctly) how they use AI to help save time and be more efficient in their day-to-day lives. However, I think this is the first time I’m hearing about personalized AI tools. I wonder about the exact step-by-step processes of providing this type of individualized AI agent—also, I wonder a lot about the responses of the company’s employees and also about their general stance towards AI usage. Would providing this personalized tool be more of a “plus,” or is it a source of concern or worry in terms of privacy? With tools like Khan Academy providing AI tools such as Khanmigo to tutor students—personalized help—I wonder where the line between personalized agents and agents that one asks personalized questions to (e.g. questions about what one is confused about) falls.
