Article: “What Is The Singularity And Are We There Yet?” 

Reflection:

In the Forbes article “What Is The Singularity And Are We There Yet?,” journalist Bernard Marr describes singularity and the question of whether or not it is an oncoming part of modern society. Marr warns against the credibility and level of objectiveness of AI industry employees’ statements, provides a brief overview of singularity’s past, then notes how this idea is distinguished from and is the step “after” artificial general intelligence. According to the article, AI’s abilities have been expanding; however, current AI falls short to the skills and abilities that humans have (e.g.) “common sense, long-term planning and anticipating how its actions might play out in unpredictable real-world environments” (Marr). There is a lot unknown about the developments of AI in the future, according to the article. 

How there is so much not known about AI and its future, along with the uncertainties over which direction it will go in given its current rapid developments, is a source of exploration. I want to learn more about these limits and their effects on society’s day-to-day functions. I wonder how singularity, if it ever does come—something I am very unsure about the direction and speed of—how it will come. Will there be one major tipping point? Will it result from a steady accumulation of events? Also, I wonder how and why the word “singularity” is used to describe this concept. Is it because the topic of future AI is one big single unknown?
