In the Forbes article “Justice Warns Against ‘Dangerous’ Attacks On Supreme Court—After Trump Slammed Justices,” journalist Alison Durkee reports on Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts’s statement against President Trump’s criticisms of the justices; the statement emphasized the need to prevent criticisms from deviating from analysis of the law. The article notes that the President’s negative criticisms of the SCOTUS is not something that was expected as 2025 has seen a substantially higher number of case decisions favoring the current administration. There have been an increasing number of negative criticisms directed towards the judicial branch over the past years, especially with the contentious topics involved, according to Durkee.

The part that stood out most to me in this article was Chief Justice John Roberts’s statement about how criticisms should be about the analysis of the law by the judges, not the judges on a personal level themselves. I agree with him and I believe this is so, so important in order to maintain collaboration and negotiation across the different branches of government. Of course, there will be heated discussion especially regarding heated topics; however, the way that each government branch approaches these collaborative efforts is, in my opinion, imperative to progress and in maintaining civil discussion. But what would be able to bring this kind of change? I think that this sort of shift towards civil discussion comes from within on a personal level, but frankly, I’m not sure how this can be brought about.
