Reflection:

In the BBC article “Ford rehires human engineers after AI fails to match quality checks,” journalist Liv McMahon discusses how several hundred expert inspectors were hired again following the previous use of AI system(s) in the company. The article shares through a Bloomberg interview with vehicle hardware engineering vice president Charles Poon the importance of training the technology (e.g. AI) with the help of experienced engineers and employees; additionally, the article also notes through the interview that teaching younger employees through the experienced employees’ guidance is also imperative.

One of the things that stand out to me most from this article is the importance of who is teaching and giving instructions to the AI technology or system—I think at first glance, it can be easy to think that giving AI instructions or tasks is simple since it does not consist of carrying out that task oneself. Something to remember is to never underestimate the role the quality of this training and the instructions have. I think this points to how, in this day and age where AI use is becoming increasingly prevalent, one has to be open-minded to building knowledge about how to use AI. I realize that AI usage is highly debated, but I think it doesn’t hurt to know more than before.
