Reflection:
In The Hill article “Flooding costs US billions of dollars per year: Report,” journalist Taylor Delandro describes the large financial costs of flooding. In previous year(s), the price added up to be well beyond 100 billion dollars (2023). A report from the Senate Joint Economic Committee explains these high costs by stating the factors such as the toll on commercial businesses and infrastructure.
I can’t help but think about how global warming exacerbates flooding. With worse floods, the economic toll becomes even more immense. There’s a greater impact on more people. Not just because of the flooding, but now economically too. Why can’t the President recognize that he needs to address things from the root cause? Or what’s closer to the root cause at the very least? Those in power seem to have the ability to unravel decades-long efforts to provide public safety. This article reminds me about the journey of the EPA’s greenhouse gas pollution regulations. There’s the recent shift towards undermining the power of the federal government in protecting the environment---how far will these efforts be able to go and what sort of changes will they make before being legally stopped?
