Reflection:

In the BBC article “‘Extremely fast’ erosion of village prompts meeting,” a town in Suffolk is experiencing the need for evacuation as erosion is causing homes to collapse near the coastline. There has been deliberation over what defense strategies should be applied to defend the village from further destruction. The economic ties that associate the region as a coastline village and tourist destination contributes to residents’ concerns over whether they will be able to raise money.

I think this further ties to how a town’s livelihood is associated with environmental factors such as (in this case) erosion. Also very importantly, one's home is tied to a sense of identity and a sense of place. I wonder about the process of decision-making behind making weighted choices that help determine whether a community will have economic stability or experience the collapse of homes. I think there would be a delicate balance in this decision-making and it requires truly, truly considering this situation from a variety of lenses—how will defense strategies be effectively implemented? How will these defense mechanisms be implemented for those who do not have the money to do so? How will the tourism industry continue to bring profit?
