Article: “Ketanji Brown Jackson says Supreme Court justices offer ‘model for learning how to disagree’”
Reflection:
In The Hill article “Ketanji Brown Jackson says Supreme Court justices offer ‘model for learning how to disagree,’” journalist Max Rego reports on Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s statements on the nature of agreement and disagreement on the bench. Justice Jackson said that the SCOTUS holds various views and that the members are respectful of one another, serving as a “‘model for learning how to disagree without being disagreeable’” (Rego).
I feel relieved. I learned in my government class last week that the SCOTUS Justice appointment process is political as it (e.g.) involves campaign promises. When I think of major decision-makers in the US today, I can’t help but recall the political and polarized nature that politics seems to involve today. I’m genuinely so glad that the SCOTUS is setting an example by showing that civil discussions can be held even in positions of pressure. I think that this article brings so much hope in that it is possible for people who hold completely different ideological stances to have civil discussions, including in the federal government in this day and age. I think that the ability to have these civil discussions, and be even a “‘model,’” supports how the SCOTUS is able to maintain composure in the face of political division. How can there be more civil discussion everywhere as a whole?
