The BBC article “Is it OK to play AI songs on the radio?” by journalist Chloe Gibson discusses the role of AI in the music industry and its impact on the sector as a whole. Specifically, the article discusses the debate over the pros and cons of AI music. Some who oppose the spread of AI-generated music point to how there has been a reduced number of artists in the music industry. Those who advocate for AI-generated music such as AI music designer Oliver McCann refer to how AI can, in fact, help find songs’ central message and meaning, along with helping make the process more efficient, according to the article. Different platforms have approached the situation in different ways—for example, Apple Music has a requirement for artists to be frank about how they have used AI while Spotify allows artists who want to share about their AI usage in the song to disclose these details.
Although I don’t have extensive knowledge about the songwriting process, I truly believe that the human voice—not an AI-generated one—is genuinely special. The inflections in voices, and the range of emotions with its various nuances that can be relayed is truly valuable and something that I hope continues to be valued and cherished by general society. Music has such a large role in my life, and it truly gives me strength when facing challenges or obstacles—I think what gives so much more meaning to this experience is the genuine process behind creating these lyrics and rhythms, along with the nuances that are delivered through (e.g.) voice tone.
