Reflection:
In the PBS News article “Jury finds Meta's platforms are harmful to children in 1st wave of social media addiction lawsuits,” Associated Press journalist Morgan Lee reports on lawsuits centered around the topic of social media addiction—specifically, a recent lawsuit in New Mexico in which a jury decided that the state’s protection regulations have been transgressed by Meta, which is also facing criticism regarding its impact on mental health of young demographics. There is a debate over Meta’s involvement in allowing for certain harmful content to be exposed to children, according to the article. Historically, the U.S. Communications Decency Act’s Section 230 had provided defense for companies in tech in that they were, through the regulation, shielded “from liability,” as stated in the article.
This debate over the extent to which a social media platform should claim responsibility for the content released on their platforms is contentious. I wonder what approaches the jury and the judge undergoes when directing and approaching the discussion for the case.
