Reflection:
On Friday, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco and heavily impacted the High Atlas Mountains, according to The New York Times. The death toll climbing to a minimum of 2,122 people, this earthquake is the worst one seen in 100 years. By Sunday morning, another quake (3.9-magnitude) struck Marrakesh, a city located in the south of Morocco. With the United States Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs declaring that over 300,000 people were impacted by this natural disaster, this event has devastated numerous communities across the country.
Global Giving and CARE are two separate organizations accepting donations to help supply survival necessities (water, food, fuel, shelter, and medicine) for those in Morocco. Moroccan Red Crescent Society has a Disaster Response Emergency Fund, which provides the finances for rescue operations. Doctors Without Borders is also open for donations to fund the medical teams that will travel to Morocco and help the community as applicable.
This is a devastating event and is a grave reminder of how life can change any moment. In one moment, one’s home can be reduced to nothing but rubble. In one moment, one’s loved ones may leave Earth. In one moment, one’s future can crumble with no remaining hope. How torn people must feel right now as I write this article. This reminds me of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Turkey earlier this year. I need to help these people.
