Reflection:
The New York Times article “Amid Record Homeless Deaths in the U.S., a Struggle for Survival” by Eli Saslow connects a personal, real life to the issue of homelessness and the fraught consequences it can bring, undermining—most of all—the well-being of those on the streets themselves. According to the article, the number of homeless deaths in San Diego has increased exponentially since 2014, with almost 600 in 2022 in comparison to 64. As this journalism piece details the journey of Abdul Curry, a homeless man in his 60s known for his willingness to help others, it emphasizes on how people have been brought to such self-disparaging states.
This article’s ending is something that stays with me as a reader. As Curry states that he is willing to be saved in any way possible, he seems to voice the many voices who desperately want to restore their lives but face so many hardships that hinder a journey of progress.
