Reflection:
In the article “New SAT Data Highlights the Deep Inequality at the Heart of American Education”, journalists Francesca Paris and Clair Cain Miller share their research on SAT, a standardized test, and its implications when it comes to comparing scores with income. Emphasizing on the large difference between scores of low-income families and that of high-income families, the article sheds light on wealth, an arguably determining factor of future prosperity. Given how standardized tests like the SAT are viewed important in the college admissions process, the journalists suggest that the resources that lead up to higher scores reflect on the opportunity disparity that stems from a young age.
This article shows how socioeconomics directly correlates to education and one’s future. Education is an aspect of life that is constantly remembered as a priority. With this disparity of opportunities between the wealthy and less wealthy, are certain individuals at a disadvantage from birth? How does where one lives, especially during their young high school years, impact their long-term future and career?
