Reflection:
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The widely-watched televised testimonies.
As I read and watched this case and discussed it with my friends, I noticed how Amber Heard was regarded as the defendant who weaved false stories to receive attention. Sure enough, many have had the same view.
According to the article “The Humiliation of Amber Heard is Both Modern and Medieval”, Jessica Bennett discusses the history behind this negating perception of “every evil, lying woman getting her comeuppance” (Bennett 1). Referring to how Heard’s humiliation is modern, the journalist cites the #MeToo, a movement concerning harassment and domestic abuse that began in 2018. Interestingly, she also emphasizes on how the actress is viewed as versions of Medusa, Lady Macbeth, and Eve. Although I have not yet read Macbeth,, I know that Medusa and Eve are generally perceived to be protagonists in their stories who brought down punishment on themselves, by themselves. This comparison is an example of Author's Craft because Medusa, Lady Macbeth, and Eve are all renowned characters whose stories are understood. This inference can be made because abuse is not a light topic, and given that the article is from The New York Times, the majority of readers are most probably older, matured, and educated.
I will not express my own opinions about this trial, but I will say this: all factors must be considered before reaching a verdict.
